I just finished reading this book cover-to-cover for the third time. It is one of the best debut novels I have ever read, and by far the best historical fiction novel I've seen. The author's excellent characterizations, particularly of the two main characters, make this book impossible to put down. The many secondary characters enrich the book even further, making it feel even more realistic and urgent. The plot is clever and satisfying, but it is the setting that puts this book at the top of my list of favorite novels. The author is truly gifted with a powerful descriptive ability that brings wartime England to life. By the end of my very first read-through, I felt that I knew exactly how it felt to fight an airborne war and to live in 1940s England. Dannegger's strengths, I think, are the subtle details he sprinkles throughout the text-- the smells, as well as the sights and sounds, of the war; the superstitions and grey humour of the men fighting on England's front lines; the distinct voices and accents of the characters, from the American fighter pilots to the British locals.
Rudyard Kipling said, "If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten." If David Dannegger wrote the history textbooks, we would be a better country for it. Until he does, we can all just enjoy this novel and wait eagerly for the next.

I love the way the author takes the reader into WWII - flying through a cloud and the "secret" that only Brian Paul and the major shared. As a woman I appreciated the unusual romance that occured in the story. I've always been drawn to stories about WWII and I really relished the details of how life was during that time and how the pilots boldly faced possible death on every mission. On a scale of 1 to 10 this book is an 11. I'd like to see more from this new author soon.

I started this book and had to keep reading. The author pulls the reader into flights of fantasy - including time travel, dog-fights in WWII Europe, and the life of the American war fighter in jolly old England. If you like WWII era stories this one will be a 'must have' for your collection. For people who always wanted to learn how to fly, climb in the cockpit of a L-2, T-6 or P-51 with Captain Paul and experience it from your favorite armchair. I bought the book at the suggestion of a friend, I read the book because I couldn't put it down, and I'll read it again.

I loved this book. The descriptions cover all the senses, so that before you realize it you are completely drawn into the book's reality. There are no false notes in the history, no anachronisms, just a wealth of detail that makes you feel as if you had been there - even as if you know what it's like to pilot a small plane! It made me remember why I wanted to take flying lessons back when I was a teenager. The story-telling is solid, the character development and dialog exceptionally well done. The romance is handled well. Best of all, the ending - so difficult to handle well in a time travel story! - is satisfying.

This story really honors the sacrifices that the "Greatest Generation" made to protect our country and freedoms that too many take for granted today. The raw, gut-wrenching decisions faced so bravely by so many during WWII still reverberate down through history. This novel makes their stories come alive and puts a face on the hardships, loves, and losses they faced in a gripping, powerful way. One gets a small taste of life during WWII and the difficulties they faced with such endurance and grace. The relationships forged draw you into life during the crucible of war. The banter and lucky rites of fighter pilots realistically portrays how many coped with the day to day horrors of a world at war. This novel will leave you wanting to thank the subsequent veteran you meet, many of which served without thought for themselves. It will also leave you wanting to know more of the men and women that lived, loved, and made the best of life during an incredible time in history.
