As a 17-year-old teenager, Jesse Martin set out on a journey to fulfill a dream few thought possible. By circumnavigating the world in his 34-foot yacht, Lionheart, Jesse would become the youngest person in history to sail around the world solo, nonstop and unassisted. It is an intimate record of his days alone at sea, transporting viewers onto the deck of Lionheart through Jesse's unique and candid approach to filming. From the joy of watching dolphins chase Lionheart to the dramatic moments as Jesse battles terrifying storms and unrelenting knockdowns, this documentary captures all the highs and lows of his incredible journey. This is truly a story of sheer inspiration and the power of chasing a dream that will uplift and motivate people of all ages.

Australian teenager Jesse Martin became the youngest person to sail solo, unassisted, and nonstop around the world, and his battles against monumental obstacles are chronicled in Lionheart, much of which Martin shot himself with a video camera mounted aboard his sailboat. Martin's 1999 journey was inspirational (25,000 people assembled to watch him arrive back home in Australia at the journey's end), and the film plays heavily upon the theme of Martin being a role model for young people. Some of the many who were rooting for him, including Peter Garrett of the Aussie rock band Midnight Oil, appear on camera to speak glowingly of Martin's determination. The footage, including some searing scenes of him freaking out while his boat was being battered by relentless bad weather, is dramatic. But at times the inherently claustrophobic nature of the tiny cabin on the small boat seems to undermine the drama taking place on the open ocean. --Robert J. McNamara

My Wife & I purchased the Lionheart DVD after reading the book of the same name.
What a fantastic documentary! The film was put together very well, using footage taken from the trip by Jesse, then linked with post-trip interviews. The result was a film that was powerful in its message, as well as being very moving and inspiring.
Buy this DVD - it WILL change how you view the world and the opportunities you have within it.

Lionheart
Jesse Martin
Lionheart is an autobiography written by Jesse Martin, who sailed around the world by himself. Jesse Martin sailed around the world, unassisted and non-stop when he was only 17 years old, trying to break a world record. I wanted to read this book because it looked very interesting. I wanted to know what it would be like to sail around the world alone. This is a story about the journey of the human spirit.
Jesse learned to sail when he was very young in Australia where he lived. He sailed on a flimsy catamaran with his dad and brother when he was 14. He also did a kayaking trip with his brother around some of the islands of Australia. When he was a little older, he sailed around the world with his friend Dave on a yacht. All these trips slowly prepared and inspired him for his solo trip around the world. "I was going to endeavor to become the youngest person to sail, solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world (pg. 49)."
Jesse only had half a year to prepare for his journey (because of his age, he wanted to be the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world). He sent in letters for sponsorship to many companies. Jesse's main sponsor was an electric company called Mistral. He also had to pack food for 9 months. He found a nutritionist named Jacinta Oxford. He also had to prepare his yacht, the Lionheart. He had to get sails, solar panels for power, wind vanes, and safety items. After all the preparing, he was finally able to leave. All the preparing got Jesse more ready and organized for the trip. " No gun shot to mark the start, and no spectators. Just my Dad somewhere around me on his small catamaran, a distant observer in the lighthouse, and the setting sun to witness what was the biggest moment of my short life (pg 97)."
The journey around the world had begun. There were lots of storms on the very first part of the journey. But, he finally got past Cape Horn, which boosted his confidence way up. After that, he barely had any wind. When he reached the Azores his family was there and he got another boost of confidence and raced towards home. He rounded the Cape of Good Hope and sailed through the finish line. When he got back home, he was greeted by thousands of people and the media. On his trip, he learned what he was capable of doing anything he set his mind to do. But if he learned anything from the trip, he learned more about himself. "But I have the most important ability in the world- the ability to dream (pg 240)."
Jesse Martin set out on this trip to learn. He learned what it felt like to be alone for 10 months. He learned how to sail solo and courageously, but he also learned about himself. He learned he had the ability to dream. His dreams and thoughts inspired him throughout the trip. His dreams led him to learn how to sail, to sail with his dad and brother, and to sail around the world by himself. Because he could dream the world knows what he is capable of, but more importantly, he knows he is capable of everything.

Bottom line first: This is a must-read book, among the best to be found.
I actually saw the film on DVD first. I found it one day more than a year ago while surfing for some information on sailing. It looked interesting, and I have a large DVD collection, so I added one more. But it was much more than I imagined, so good, in fact, that I bought the book, which was even better. I've read and re-read it many times, and I show the DVD to any friends who will sit and watch. I was actually so compelled by it that I sought Martin's email address and began a correspondence with him.
In November of 2004, had the opportunity to travel to Australia and Papua New Guinea to meet Jesse and all of his family. They are, each and every one, the nicest people I've ever met. My assessment of Jesse is that while he may have peers, there is no finer person on the planet! That may sound pompous or even ridiculous, but I stand by the remark emphatically.
Everyone, young or old, should read Jesse's book, see his video, and watch for more coming in the future. "Lionheart" is by no means Jese's very first or last adventure. I've read a draft of his upcoming book, which is yet another winner. He's so down-to-earth and real, I think he's unable to write a clunker! They're all great... I've ordered copies to donate to my local library!
