Deloca is the very first of nineteen artificial planets constructed by humanity for colonization outside our solar system. After a thousand years, it and the three other planets that compose the Deloca System have evolved their own unique educational structure. At the age of fifteen, students are brought to Deloca for a year long journey on one of two trains that travel across the world to various points of interest, giving a hands-on education. The "General Studies" train is for students who just want to get the bare experience, but the "Special" train is for those that want to push themselves to the subsequent level, and we're not just talking about school. The Special train prides itself on producing complete human beings, but it also has a record for flunking students out and sometimes they even disappear! Rei and Liae are two childhood friends looking to board the General Studies Train but they get involved with a runaway tough girl named Arena Pendleton. Arena is quite an appropriate name since she's willing to battle just about anyone that gives her trouble with her sheathed katana. Arena wants to board the Special Train but her rich grandpa has strictly forbid it so she ran away and is trying to make it to the station on her own. Her grandfather has even hired an investigator named Kong Seeval to capture her, and he comes equipped with an amazing extending chain weapon.
I really liked this very first volume of Train+Train, even though the wonder of its opening sequences kinda wore off after the kids boarded the Train, revealing a world not that much different from the one in which we live. Still, the characters of Rei and Arena were sufficiently interesting as they played off each other. Rei is a boy who just hopes to get by in life, get an education, get a job, marry, and work till it's time to retire and die. Arena, on the other hand is the picture of rashness and irresponsibility, living her life to the fullest each moment. But the two characters tend to balance each other and Rei has even begun to show a little risk-taking and more open behaviors since Arena appeared on the scene. This is a good very first volume.
