Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Buying a car can be a smart idea – a car loses the lion’s share of its value when it is driven off the new car lot, so why let someone else take that loss?  But buyer beware:  A used car is likely to need more repairs and may come with a short warranty or none at all.    In addition, used cars may lack the latest safety features.  That is why it is so important for consumers to do extensive research so they can avoid all of the potential pitfalls of buying a used car.

The auto experts at Consumer Reports have done the work for you and have compiled their extensive research and report their findings into the 2007 edition of USED CAR BUYING GUIDE.  This fabulous tool will help steer any consumer who is in the market for a used car towards the better-performing and more reliable used car models and away from those models with a troubled past or substandard performance.  Before consumers set foot on a used car lot, they should read all the valuable information provided in this book so they can be armed with as much information as possible and the knowledge to make an educated choice.  Consumer Reports knows cars and offers the most detailed and revealing used car reliability information available anywhere including:

- Unbiased reviews of every major model from 1999 – 2006- Lists of the best and worst used vehicles and how to avoid a lemon  - A checklist of what to look for when inspecting a used car- Best used cars for gas mileage- Tips on negotiating the best priceReliability, recalls and crash test information- Making sense of safety information -How to get the most money when trading in your current car

The majority of this book is devoted to the profiles of 264 cars, minivans, SUVs and trucks, presenting all major 1999-2006 models.  Each profile contains a photo from the representative year, a write-up of the vehicle, reliability history, crash-test data, and the model years when key safety gear was added and when a major redesign was made.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Well Organized
As long as you aren't trying to buy an obscure make or model car, this will be a very helpful tool in picking out your new (to you) car. It was very helpful for me in deciding to shop for Honda Accords.

As a spoiler, I will go ahead and tell you the gist of the reviews - something we all already knew - your best bet is to buy a Honda or a Toyota (or any of its variants). Happy hunting!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Buying a used car? Read this first
Once again they created and easy to use book. I've consulted this book since 1973 when ever I was about to buy a new or used car.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great Resource for those in the market for a used car!!
This guide tells you everything you need to know about the used/pre-owned buying process, though you might be surprised at the results of many popular cars. It has a side by side comparison of the certified-pre-owned programs, warning signs when looking at a car, etc.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - some difficult graphics
Overall an excellent guide for purchasing used cars. My only complaint are the hard-to-visually-scan graphics they use for rating reliability history and crash test results. A reference should be easier to scan without having to constantly refer back to a legend that is buried somewhere in the front of the book.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Best Guide for Used Car Buyers
Consumer Reports provides a vital function in today's uber-materialist culture. They report objectively about the many products we purchase. In so doing they cut through all of the hype, distortion, and outright lies of the marketers, ad-men, and other assorted hucksters who bombard us constantly.

This guide is a powerful tool for helping both the new and experienced car buyer with the difficult task of sorting out the lemons from the cream puffs. It provides detailed information on each car and then summarizes the best used car buys and the worst used car buys -- for those with limited attention spans like me.

I could not recommend this guide more highly. It is an essential part of the decision making process of used car buyers.
