Following the catastrophic losses inflicted on the Russian Air Force during the opening months of Operation Barbarosssa, Luftwaffe Jagdflieger performed even more spectacularly against the VVS in the very first 10 months of 1942. For German fighter pilots, January to October 1942 were 'Happy Times' on the Russian Front. Christer Bergstrom and Martin Pegg trace the events of those momentous months in VOLUME THREE, SECTION FOUR of the Ian Allan LUFTWAFFE COLOURS series.
Statistics tell all in summarizing the air combats of January-October 1942. Up to July 1942, 11 Luftwaffe pilots had topped the 100 victory-mark. In just four months (July to October 1942), 18 pilots surpassed that same mark! Previously unattainable scores fell by the wayside - 150 kills, 200! Even more importantly, those kills kept VVS aircraft off the backs of Luftwaffe bombers and ground-support aircraft, enabling them to give support to the Wehrmacht ground units. During those 'Happy Times,' experten like Graf, Gollob, Krafft, Steinhoff, Nowotny, Hackl, Setz and Pichler ruled the skies over the Russian Front. Yet, while the Jagdwaffe almost broke the Soviet stamina in 1942, the VVS would revive. The 'Happy Times' were about to end.
THE WAR IN RUSSIA, JANUARY-OCTOBER 1942 is yet another exemplary entry in the LUFTWAFFE COLOURS series. Written by two noted Luftwaffe authorities, the text does an excellent job of summarizing those momentous months. Six first-hand reminiscences give the reader fascinating 'you-are-there' memories.
The illustrations for VOLUME THREE, SECTION FOUR are simply superb. The book is stuffed with hundreds of grey & white and colour photographs and maps. (The oversize format chosen by Ian Allan allows the photographs - sometimes as many as six to a page - to be displayed to their best advantage. By contrast, the small size Osprey chose for their books often results in postage-stamp size photos).
Tom Tullis provides gorgeous artwork of Bf 109s and FW 190s, 22 top-notch colour profiles that demonstrate why he's rated at the top of today's crop of aviation illustrators. Tullis also includes several scrap views showing the colorful rudders of Experten aircraft. Eddie Creek provides a sampling of unit insignia as well.
I'd rated THE WAR IN RUSSIA, JANUARY-OCTOBER 1942 as one of the best LUFTWAFFE COLOURS efforts yet. The combination of well-written text and exceptional mix of photos and artwork make this one a keeper! Highly recommended.
