Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
God created his children as sexual opposites, and designed marriage to be the context of erotic pleasure. While the church has been mostly silent on the subject of sex, the world and the devil have attempted to make it their domain. The church has rightly proclaimed biblical prohibitions on the misuse of sex, but it has failed to speak out on the godliness of erotic pleasure in the context of marriage. Out of 66 books composing the Bible, one whole book is dedicated to promoting erotic pleasure - Song of Solomon. Michael Pearl takes his readers through a refreshing journey of Biblical texts. This sanctifying look at the most powerful passion God ever created will free the reader from false guilt and inhibition.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Do not give money to these people
No matter what you think of this book, do NOT give money to these people. They are sick child abusers. Read the reviews of other books they have written.

Really sick people...

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Some good points, but lacks fruits of the Spirit
The author presents some valid points. Conservative Christians have often considered sex as a purely reproductive function, deemphasizing the pleasurable aspects of it. Michael Pearl brings out the fact that sex is not just for reproduction, but for pleasure as well.

The very first third or so of the book is an exegesis of Song of Solomon. It is definitely not one of the best exegeses of that book, but it is still useful. I think Pearl is correct in seeing the book as primarily a story about Solomon and his lover. However, there are different interpretative outlines that other commentators have produced, and they should be explored.

The last two thirds of the book is Pearl's discusion of various aspects about sex, some of which are tied directly to Song of Solomon, some of which are not. In this section, the writing is rough, not well thought out, unscientific, and wrong in some areas. It seems as though he writes ideas that he just thought of, without very first studying Scripture to see if it supports those ideas. Pearl also seems rather prideful and judgmental. If others do not hold his views, or do the things he thinks are wrong, they are condemned. He also seems prideful about his sexual experience.

Most of all, the writing is lacking in grace. As I mentioned, pride and judgment are present in the pages. He does have a section where he mentions Jesus and forgiveness, but Jesus/grace is not ever-present in this writing. The book reads like Pearl's interpretation of God's laws on sex, and condemns those who do not follow it. It makes me sad.

Even if Pearl's interpretation of God's law on sex is correct, Jesus and mercy are not emphasized. John 8 is a good foil to this reading.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - they are always interesting
I enjoyed this book but know the Pearls are always in your face blunt, I agree with 95% of what they say and as long as you can take from this book the things that are helpful and wonderful to you and move on with out taking offence to what you don't like then you too will enjoy this.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Poorly prepared, written...
This isn't so much a 'bad' book as it is inferior to several other excellent books by authors with far better backgrounds in scriptural study and relationship counseling. Pearl's examination of the Song of Solomon is generally accurate as far as it goes, but his ability to "mine" for insight is weak. If you are looking for a book that will enrich your relationship, I recommend "Love Life" by Ed Wheat, or "The Book of Romance: What Solomon Says About Love, Sex and Intimacy" by Tommy Nelson. Both authors, especially Nelson, offer a much more qualified and far more insightful view of the Song of Solomon.
When not discussing the S.o.S., Pearl loses ground even further; he apparently has only his personal marriage experience to draw on. Also, frankly, many of his comments are crude, and some of his translations of other scriptures are patently false. Beyond that, Pearl offers his own opinion as a statement of moral truth several times in the novel, with no scriptural backing. He's just not that talented of an author.
