The Arado Ar-234 was the very first purpose-built jet bomber. Although the prototypes were completed largely by the end of 1941, delays in the supply of the engines meant that it was not until July 1943 that the type very first flew. By the end of the war, more than 220 of the type had been constructed, although only a small proportion of these had actually entered service. The ME-262 is well known as the very first operational jet fighter to be used in serious combat. Much less known is the Arado 234, named by Hitler as the Blitz (Lightening) Bomber. Used as a bomber and as a photo rec reconnaissance aircraft it had a number of firsts. For one thing, it was the only reconnaissance aircraft that was able to penetrate the fighter protection screen over the Normandy beaches. (The German high command didn't like the pictures that were brought back showing how many men, how much material was there.)
This book has a truly amazing number of pictures of the 234 as it made its way from concept and the very first prototypes and various engine configurations. The book really concentrates on the development of the 234. Only in the last few pages does it talk about the operational use of the 234A and one picture of a 234 B.
Some 220 production aircraft were built. Nine of these were captured by the British at Sola airfield near Stavanger, Norway at the end of the war. One of these, a 234-B-2 is on display at the Smithsonian's new facility at Dulles Airport. There are no other known examples of the plane in existence.
