Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife’s grave. Then he joined the army.

The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity’s resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force. Everybody knows that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don’t want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You’ll be taken off Earth and never allowed to return. You’ll serve two years at the front. And if you survive, you’ll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets.

John Perry is taking that deal. He has only the vaguest idea what to expect. Because the actual fight, light-years from home, is far, far harder than he can imagine—and what he will become is far stranger.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Right up there with the best SF
This is an enormously satisfying read and I say this as a SCIFI fan of over 45 years. I just love the concept of brain pals. You won't regret reading this one.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Maybe even a 4.5
This is an entertaining space adventure/war novel of the very first order.Fast paced, well written and thought provoking. The science is fine and doesn't bog the story down.If you like old school classic sci-fi with a protagonist that can be funny but very serious in equal measure then you will really enjoy this novel.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Transhumanism and action with an interesting plot
I'm fascinated by tales of transhumanism. Old Man's War is a novel concept that takes us to places we might find if we develop the technology to move the contents of a human mind around into various bodies. It's also much, much more.

Scalzi's writing style is palatable. His plot devices worked for me. I found his characters interesting. It's a big universe out there, and Scalzi shows us what he imagines it might be like for humanity if we can ever move off our home planet.

Military elements in Old Man's War are well crafted and plausible. I found the book to be hard to put down, which becomes rarer and rarer as I age.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Entertaining Read That Does Not Disappoint
I believed I was in for a treat after reading the very first three pages and noting Scalzi's storytelling ability. I was not disappointed. Scalzi's characters were well-developed and he does an excellent job of blending humour into his tale. Some of the humour was cutesie, some a little corny, but it was not too bad and it worked with the story. The way he told the story felt like it was coming from the perspective of an older man. I honestly couldn't wait to see what would happen on the subsequent page. In this book, he also briefly touched on the moral complexities of war and colonization, but did not delve deeply enough to dampen the mood or affect the entertainment value of the novel. The only real issue I had was that a couple of times he resorted to the antiquated SF method of explaining the science in the novel - one character explains it as though reading a script. For example, "As you know John, the ship is powered by a grey light fusion reactor which operates by ... blah, blah, blah." This is not a quote from the book, but you get my meaning. Other than this and a few typos this was a very well-writted novel by Scalzi.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Loved it
If you enjoy sci-fi, then you must get this book. It offers realistic, likeable characters who you can easily idenfity with. The book is a believable, very fun adventure/dream to get lost in. I will forever hope and dream for an end adventure like this with my own life. I just have to come up with a way to create that skip drive first.
