Dirk Pitt fans will be pleased to know that Clive Cussler's "Treasure of Khan" is a throw-back to the rollicking adventures from the earlier days of the Pitt franchise. Both Pitt and his sidekick, Al Giordino, are prominently featured in starring roles in this non-stop novel. Cussler's son, Dirk, is listed as the co-author, but those familiar with the other 18 Pitt novels, will quickly see that it's Clive's book primarily.
This latest NUMA exploit revolves around a Mongolian megalomaniac's (Tolgoi Borjin) desire to disrupt the world's oil reserves for his own profit and gain. Using a secret machine (aren't they all?) to create "home-made" earthquakes designed to destroy oil refineries, Borjin and his evil sister, Tatiana, concoct a plan to honor the memory of Genghis Khan while by returning Mongolia to a position of economic power and wealth through control of world oil reserves.
Pitt and Giordino (with cameos by Pitt's son and daughter, Dirk Jr. and Summer) battle Borjin and his empire with flair and panache'. Old standbys, Rudi Gunn, Hiram Yeager, and Admiral (now Vice President) Sandecker are also present and accounted for in this exciting Pitt adventure that contains the usual copious amounts of action, amazing escapes, gadgets, and the ever-present vintage car.
If you're new to the series, this reviewer would suggest that you start from the beginning with "Night Probe" and "Raise the Titanic" to fully appreciate the cast of characters. Longtime fans of the series will not be disappointed and will find this book as comfortable as their favorite old shoe. This is the Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt of old!
