If you are teaching your child to read, get this book. This is the book that my Mother used to teach me to read. It brings back many fond memories of our time reading together. What worked for me as a child is how Betty Ren Wright wrote only one or two sentences per page, and used really interesting word/picture associations; Animals, food, people, and of course, the train. My Mother would start off reading the whole book then give me the book to read. I would work my way through, taking one page at a time, and sometimes got frustrated trying to pronounce a really hard word. When this happened, she would stop and we would start over the subsequent evening. I don't know how long it took for me to get through the entire book by myself, but her technique and this book must have been worth it. By the time I got to elementary school, I was reading three full grade levels above my peers. The artwork is really wonderful too, and the story of a train named Joe, his cargo and the community in which he serves, is appropriate and interesting for any child. I'm sure my Mother's love, technique and patience is the real reason I learned to read so well, and it's nice to know that the book she used is still available. Enjoy.
