- Suspense but no conclusion
Once again Mark Twain's formula for an American crime writer of killing everybody off at the end is followed. This time September 11th does it, wiping out witnesses and conspirators alike. Too bad!!
For almost 500 pages we surely want to know who targeted this flight and why was there a cover-up?
There is much humour and suspense through-out but the essentials are unanswered.

- A Complete Fizzle of a Book
I'm baffled by the honest positive reviews this books has received from reviewers who I take not to be shills. Perhaps it's the skill in writing which is apparent throughout the book or the fact that all plot lines are resolved in the end.
I'll grant the writing and plotting skill. I'll not concede the skill is apparent in the plot resolution, however, because the author relies on an enormous deus ex machina to resolve the plot. He starts telegraphing that this machina will appear somewhere along the way from the very start of the book. The existence of this machina grows in apparent size and resolution as the book goes on. By the time you are the final 30 or so pages, the author is screaming at you that he's abandoned all attempts at addressing the book's initial promise and will simply resign the book to a big laugh on the hapless fool who bought the thing.
I'll grant the book's initial promise to propose a solution to the mystery of an airplane crash is intriguing. However, that's all there is - a promise and that promise is betrayed by the most outrageous laziness I've ever heard of from any author at any time. Along the way to your disappointment, you'll meet a cast of repulsive characters led by the nastiest protagonist this side of Hannibal Lecter. Lacking Hannibal's intellect, we have only the nasty left behind.
If your idea of a good read is for you to follow a protagonist whose idea of proper behavior is being a foul mouthed bully and then at the end, no single plot line is resolved or addressed within the parameters of the opening chapters, have at.
This is my very first DeMille book. It is also my last. I'm on that machina seeking other authors.

- A good read...but
Ok, I have read a few Nelson DeMille books and I do like them for entertainment. His hero, John Corey propels the story forward and I do like John's irreverent humour as well as Nelson's well-crafted action and well researched stories.
Like many stories the beginning is very good and so is the middle, a place where many books start to get mushy. Sadly, Night Fall has a far too predictable ending which I had anticipated but really did not think DeMille would actually use such a weak ending.
SPOILER: Unfortunately, with this one I found the ending a bore. Not plausible. I had guessed early in reading that possibly the WTC event would factor into the ending. But I dismissed that notion as too simplistic of an ending for Nelson. By the time I was mid-way in the story I began to fear that the conclusion would devolve into the WTC on 9/11 and unfortunately it did. I think there was a better ending than having the main witnesses and video tape et al disappear at the explosion at the WTC. Otherwise it was a good read with a disappointing ending.

- Fantastic book
My husband and I both read this book and neither of us could put it down. My husband actually started reading it late at night when I finished and then he read for the entire night not stopping until it was time to leave for work in the morning. I have recommended this book to so many people and all of them have been just as impressed with it. Definitely one of the best books I have ever read.
