A young boy goes out in search for his dad in a department store after getting separated from him.
There are several picture books out there to help instruct your child about safety. That is not the point of this book. The boy thinks he spots his dad hat, shoes, or tie but when you turn the page it turns out to be someone or something else. It's like a lift-the-flap book but it never gets ruined because there are no actual flaps to flip.
A storytime favorite. Delightful.

My children loved this book when we borrowed it from the library.
They wanted to read this book for a whole week. They could not get enough of it.
The graphic and the story line kept them interested. They are delighted by
the flip pages and cut outs.

This book has been critisized for being a cold and uninviting treatment of the subject of a child getting lost. In my experience as a mother and elementary school teacher I have found the exact opposite to be true. Children respond with rapt interest to the colorful illustrations and marvel as the die-cut pages are turned to reveal something unexpected every time. The language is simple and easy to follow, and the story of a young child separated from his parent in the mall is something children can all relate to. Taro Gomi's books are especially popular with young children (1-7yrs) for their simple text and unique illustrations and "I Lost My Dad!" is no exception. I recommend this and all Taro Gomi's books to parents of children who love to read.
