Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Yes, you can build a boat! It’s one of the most enjoyable, rewarding things you can do.

This book contains full building plans (in a large 11' X 17' foldout section) for six different boats, including a fourteen-foot sailboat, a two-person canoe, two rowboats, and two motorboats. And it contains instructions for making your own oars, making your own sails, and a wealth of other practical information.

This book takes the complete novice β€” armed only with a gleam in the eye, and a basic knowledge of hammer, saw, and screwdriver β€” and walks him or her through the process of building a boat. The basic materials are easily available from any lumberyard: plywood, boards, nails, and fibre glue. The process is simple, the result is extraordinary β€” your own boat, ready to take you over the water, built in your spare time, for a fraction of the cost of buying a new factory-built (boring!) boat. And the sense of accomplishment is beyond compare.

Full plans and detailed step-by-step instructions are given, with over one hundred drawings and photographs. Those instructions can be applied to any of the plans included: for a sailboat, a motorboat, a rowboat, or a canoe.

This book goes beyond just building your boat: it includes chapters on making your own oars and sails; making kick-up rudders, pivoting leeboards, flotation compartments, and hatches; tips for cartopping and trailering your boat; information on fixing used outboard engines; and much more. It is an introductory book that will continue to be pored over as the beginner transforms himself or herself into an experienced boatbuilder.

Also included are a catalog of twenty-three other boat designs for dreaming over, a guide to boatbuilding sites on the web, a guide to materials suppliers, and a bibliography of further reading.

A great book for families, for scout groups, for school shop classes, for anyone who enjoys messing about in boats. If you've ever dreamed of building a boat, this is the book for you!

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - so so
It was a decent read, but the boats they had weren't really what I was looking for. They had more listed in the back but you had to buy those plans, it only came with 6 boat plans. The Mayfly, a 14' sailboat, the Piragua, a 13' canoe, two versions of the 13' QT Skiff, one a rowboat and the other a motorboat, a 16' Jonsboat and the Robote, a 14' rowboat.

Personally, I decided to just buy plans from one of the many websites on the internet.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great and Remarkably Clearly Written
This author certainly must know a great deal of what he's talking about - you can easily gain from his obvious experience, and be sure it's sound - when you read the quite wise tips on working around problems, evaluating what kind of boat is best for you, and his consistently practical approach to the subjects.
That he includes a number of plans is just another benefit.
I found his writing to be refreshingly clear, open and drawing me to want to read more. A great writer, in my opinion, feels like a wise friend, who's begun a conversation with you, and made you feel secure in the subject. He or she also makes you feel not only like you're there with him or her, but also makes you feel that you'd be glad to know them.
Jim Michalak, in my opinion, does all of that - while educating and thus raising the standard in books on this subject.
Praises ....and hope he writes more.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A very useful book
I own about half a dozen books on boat building that I think have considerable merit, but Jim Michalak's is probably the most useful of the lot. I've used it to make improvements on an existing boat, to make a rowing skiff from plans provided in the book, and to make a set of oars from Jim's plans. Jim's designs aren't fancy, but they work really well and they're easy to produce. Can't beat that. If you want to build meticulously crafted 'show' boats this book is not for you. If you want to build a boat you can be proud of, that performs well, and won't require a second mortgage to pay for, then you can't go wrong here.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Deffinately a book for the novice builder
When they say Novice they are speaking the truth. Anyone with a a little woodworking knowledge will become bored with this book. However, it is a good very first book for those getting into boat building but not nearly the depth one would look for in furthering their knowledge and craft.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Good boat building information.
I found this book very helpful. I have not actually build any of the boats in this book, but I found the information useful in other boats that I have built. I especially liked his oarlock sockets, and his oar plans. I have build oars from his plans and they came out awesome.
