Product Description:
A highly illustrated, step-by-step guide to constructing a range of simple model steam engines, aimed at both beginners and the more experienced.
This book details the construction of a range of simple miniature steam engines and boilers. The projects, each of which can be completed with only a basic workshop, range from a single-acting oscillator to more sophisticated twin-cylinder double-acting engines and a variety of boilers. A final project brings together engine and boiler for a simple steam railway locomotive. These projects are a perfect introduction to model engineering and an enjoyable exercise for the more experienced engineer or those who wish to pass on their hobby to a younger generation.
Stan Bray is an experienced craftsman in engineering and metalworking; among his previous books is Metalworking: Tools and Techniques.

This is one of the better Model Engineering books that I have read. The author gives clear instructions on building oscillating steam engines and boilers from the very simple to the more complicated. Clear drawings and instructions are given for each model, although there are a few errors in the drawings, they are not too hard to work around. Each model has two sets of drawings, one with dimensions in the metric system and the other with Imperial dimensions. I can highly reccomend this book to anyone who wishes to build their very first model engine and boiler.

Using clear instructions, without overly technical language, this well illustrated book provides excellent guidance for making small oscillating steam engines. Some can be made with basic tools - drill, vise, square and scribe. And by separating engine, boiler and burner designs you can mix and match to suit your own creative ideas. It is also good for those who just want a better understanding of how steam engines work. I recommend this book highly.

This title should have read "Making low quality osillating toy steam engines". There are no "MODEL" engine plans in this book, only toy engine plans. A model is a small copy of a real steam engine. A toy is a small working steam engine of no specific design.

This book has it all, diagrams, instructions, and best of all its not written in technical garble.

Excellent book - especially for the beginning model engineer. All the engines are the "wobbler" type. Boiler plans seem adequate. The last project is a locomotive after the style used in many logging railroads in the United States in the early 1900's.
