Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
In Dangerous Weapons: The Sicilian, John Emms and Richard Palliser team up to investigate by far the most popular and widely-played chess opening, but in a revolutionary way. They select an abundance of opening weapons for both White and Black, many of which are innovative, visually shocking, incredibly tricky, or have been unfairly discarded.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great Sicilian ideas!!
I really enjoyed this book. I have used the recommended anti-Dragon line to good effect and have had several players mention that they have never seen that line.

The Ga-Pa variation looks tricky but if White plays it right Black could get into trouble.

I was particularly intrigued by the lines against the taminov, although I haven't used them quite yet.

I recommend this book to any Sicilian player or a 1.e4 player who wants to shake up his game.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Very useful guide and a source to start your own analysis !
As tournament player (my title is a national master - almost a fide master) I would say this book gives many refreshing ideas for those of us (like me) who havn't gone through the classics of the masters of sicilian (Especially Jafim Geller).
For example - Against the sicilian four knights the book introduces a very nice and venomous gambit (even if grey is prepared - there is not more than equality) vs. the four knights - 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 e6 3.d4 c:d 4.n:d4 nf6 5.nc3 nc6 6.be2 6...bb4 (6...d6 if grey wish to enter the classical Scheveningen) 7.be2 !? b:c3 8.0-0 n:e4 9.bd3 !? (also possible is 9.qd3) It can be very useful for those who wish to avoid Sveshnikov (Btw, the book also provides a weapon vs. Sveshnikov in the regular move order 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 nc6 3.d4 c:d 4.n:d4 nf6 5.nc3 e5 6.ne2 !?). It also provides weapons vs. the Taimanov and the Dragon !
(8.a3 !? in the main line Taimanov - 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 e6 3.d4 c:d 4.n:d4 nc6 5.nc3 qc7 6.be3 a6 7.be2 nf6 8.a3 instead of 0-0 -> Again white should be familiar with the Classical Scheveninen idea of managing the agressive advance of its king's side (g4,f4 etc'))
The book also suggests (I didn't go over it yet) to avoid all the big main lines by choosing 5.f3 (Prins variation) vs. 2...d6 Sicilian (Black may consider the tricky mover order 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 d6 3.d4 nf6 ! forcing white to play 4.d:c5 if it opts to avoid main lines)
The book recieves only four start because, to my view, it is not balanced in the sense that some lines recieve more explanations and detailed analysis than others. For Example more effort should be put in explaining what the benefits in choosing 5.f4 vs. the Kan. The examples (a cute win by Emory tate but not so relevant to theory) and Analysis seem little odd and not oriented.
However, this is a very good book especially for white players (To be honest, I only briefly looked at the suggestions for black, therefore I'd like to comment only about one example: 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 e6 3.d4 c:d 4.n:d4 qb6 ?! (the book gives it !?) 5.Nc3 nf6 6.e5 bc5 7.Ndb5 !!
The asessment of the variation in the book is not unclear after 7...nd5
8.qf3 a6 9.n:d5 e:d 10.nc3 bb4 as the authers only suggest the greedy 11.q:d5 d6 12.e:d6 be6 for whire - however after 11.a3 qa5 ! 12.rb1 b:c3 13.q:c3 q:q 14.b:c3 white enjoy advantage in the endgame. Another suggestions for grey are 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 nc6 3.d4 c:d 4.n:d d5 !? and Okelly variation 2...a6 , Vallejo's Lowenthal 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 nc6 3.d4 c:d 4.n:d4 e5 5.nb5 a6 6.nd6+ b:d6 7.q:d6 qf6 and few more )
I must mention for beginners, that this is not a basic book to start with !
It offers and suggests many transposition and ideas how to improve and dazzle your opponents with existing knowledge. This book is especially for those who want fresh ideas in the sicilian but do have some common knowledge of their own. (The book is fair enough within picking the not deceptive title - Dangerous Weaponas and not a full arsenal ! for example - there is no cure vs. the annoying Accelerated Dragon).
My advice for you is to combine this very refreshing and interesting project with studying the classics of sicilian.
If you chose the 6.be2 gambit vs. the four knight - then you should combine it with studying the Classical Scheveningen (what I myself intend to do) because grey can also choose 6...d6 not entering the gambit as I've mentioned.
Besides, I think the classics main lines of Scheveningen and Najdorf should be learnt before getting into the realms of theory of the English Attack.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Enthusiastically recommended
Even in this era of the video game, chess still continues to grow in popularity world wide. This is partly because the complexities of chess seem to constantly expand and develop with each new generation of players. Now Grandmaster John Emms and International Master Richard Palliser have collaborated to focus on the variations of opening moves that are collectively referred to as 'Sicilian' in "Dangerous Weapons: The Sicilian". This 304-page instructive guide and manual offers a huge array of opening moves for both white and grey piece players. Showcasing opening Sicilian moves in a new light, this simply outstanding and 'player friendly' contribution the game is enthusiastically recommended for personal, professional, academic, and community library Chess reference collections and supplemental reading lists as being suitable for both the novice and the experienced chess player.
