I find this program goes too fast for anyone not already familiar with the language. There are too many new words and phrases introduced at a time. Going back over sections you don't understand or have not mastered is hard to do. The introduction on the very first CD is too long. There should be a way to bypass it to get to a review of the lesson.

I am very disappointed in this product and do not recommend it to others.
Some words and phrases are drilled ad infinitum with no seeming rhyme or reason. This is okay because you are hearing clear and deliberate articulations with a slightly faster repeat. So at least your learn to say things correctly. But things take a turn for the worse as the series progresses.
After you have learned the Level 1 discs and insert Level 2, you are greeted with a very fast speaking woman, instead of the fellow who did Level 1. There is no explanation as to why the sudden jump in speed and expectation. She says everything twice at the same speed. It's ridiculous and the creator of this series should have scratched her insertions and started over. I had another person in the car with me on a long trip when we reached that point and got quite a good laugh, though it was ultimately at my $$ expense.
When this person yields to another presenter, it goes back to "slow first, a bit quicker second" in the repetition scheme and is a relief. I developed a near-Pavlovian panic/anger response every time this woman came back onto the disc for a story. Almost threw that disc out the window.
One of the most annoying features however, is that the presenter will sometimes throw a new word in with no warning or explanation of the meaning or context. If that word is spoken by the fast-talking woman, you never do figure out what you are trying to say. This isn't confined to nouns, but includes past and future tenses of verbs which are not explained at that time. Because I want to get my money's worth, I will still finish the series, but there is an overall negative feeling about the shortcomings of the product.
I feel that the creator of this series did not have a masterful plan based on understanding how to teach a foreign language. Rather it seems that he figured out how to make a buck. It's too bad, because the conception of learning while you drive is great for people stuck with daily commutes.
I hope he re-does the series someday with a more conscious, and methodical approach.

After using the Penton "Learn In your Car" and reading reviews of BTW I really was expecting more. Very disappointed with the time they allow you to repeat. Almost none sometimes. There also does not seem to be a learning plan--such as basics on to a little more advance and so on. By disc 6 they get all kinds of involved with the present subjunctive and I do not really think they have covered the simple parts of the language yet. Let's face it those of us starting out need the basics very first and then move on. I would not recommend this but now that I own it I will use it and gain something from it. If you really are interested in learning go to Central America and do a week or two of immersion study. [...]

I know quite a bit of spanish, but this is a great way to get up to speed in a "brainless" way. I put it on every morning on the way to work and get my spanish lesson for the day in a no-stress way. It also gives you something to focus on other than traffic!

From the crystal clear voices to the multi-track system, this three level course is a joy to use and is fabulously effective.
My course covers levels 1 through 3 and does so in a most entertaining and pleasant fashion.
I already have a book from the Behind the Wheel 1 course, even though the tapescript doesn't follow this course.
My opinion is that you truly get a lot of 'bang for the buck' with this course because you get a substantial amount of instruction in all three levels.
Additionally, this course is an original. I say this because I own and am currently using all the Behind the Wheel Spanish courses I can find.
I love them and am learning to quickly speak Spanish fluently thanks to them.
One bit of advice.
If you truly want to learn all the details of the language in depth and avoid redundancy, then I do recommend you buy all three levels of Behind the Wheel Spanish.
If, however, you wish to have an integrated format with all three levels at once (without a book, mind you) and get a break in the overall cost,
then this course is definitely for you.
