Abu Ali is told he is the only one who can find the peripatetic island, locate the Button-Nosed Tortoise, and reverse the spell. And so begins a series of adventures that invoke a memorable cast of characters, some despicable, some feckless, and some (no surprise) beautiful and feisty.
It's all here - Flying Carpets, Green Dragons, Magic Phoenix Birds, Boomalakka Wee, the dysfunctional infant son of the Genie of the Lamp, the displaced mouse who was supposed to have been a donkey, even Omar Khayyam himself. It all adds up to a fantastical tale of adventure and mayhem, fabricated by the screenwriter of The Wizard of Oz and illustrated by the inimitable and beloved Edward Ardizzone.
The Land of Green Ginger was very first published in 1937, revised and expanded in 1966, and republished again in 1975, the text on which this edition is based.

Its an OK story though the book takes a different approach and repeats to a dullness the prince's names over and over again.

It's about Abu Ali, the son of Aladdin, who is supposed to save a magician who made a spell go wrong, and it turned him into a button-nose tortoise. The magician lives in the Land of Green Ginger, which is why Abu Ali goes there. He also wants to marry a lady who is called Silver Bud. Her father is a mean man called Sulkpot Ben Nagnag. He never lets her out of her room, except to take a walk around the garden. Whenever someone comes into the yard unexpectedly, he puts them in prison, and the subsequent day he boils them in oil.
Abu Ali has a lamp, and the son of the genie who helped Aladdin lives in it (the dad is busy). He can give wishes, but he tends to mess things up, like when Abu Ali wants a donkey, he makes a mouse instead.
I liked the book because it was funny and interesting. There wasn't anything I didn't like about it. I'm glad there were no smoochy-woochy kisses, like in the movie "Aladdin."

Very old school fairy tale, with two evil princes and one good one. It has flying carpets and magical moving lands. What more could you want? Good for you, good for the kids. Buy it.

Written by the author of the screenplay for, "The Wizard of Oz".This is a very charming, happy tale for children and adults. It is second only to, "Desbarollda The Waltzing Mouse" for humor.
