I am a beginner to all aspects of automotive care and customization. I found this book extremely easy to read and follow through the steps to achieving the end results shown in the examples. The photos helped me ensure I was on the right path because I could see what there was to work with, and provided an easier way of checking to see that I was on the right track. With several months of working my way around my car, I can see how I will eventually outgrow these books, however if you are someone who is just starting out and enjoys do it yourself customization I recommend this series.

The advantage of the Haynes Xtreme series is quite simple, installation instructions. With limited options, there are few sources to get modding information and just about nowhere, bookwise in 2005, to get installation instructions. Much of the background information about how cars work and there parts need to be found elsewhere. Instead you find short chapters that cover a large range of topics. What you gain is advice and some general guidelines to follow on different areas of performance. Anybook that provides 10 pages on turbocharging will be unable to describe, plan, and install a system despite it's advertising.
Another book, Mods for Dummies, includes info on selecting the best type of products and their advantages and disadvantages, unlike with the Haynes manual. It's a better, fuller, introduction than provided with the Haynes Manual, but without the installation instructions.
One thing I dislike about the series is the authors speaking manner, which could be much more concise. I prefer to get to the point and get out. Another annoyance issue was the constant, shameless advertisements for their repair manuals. I use their manuals, but after this I am seriously considering putting my manual through the slow torture I had to endure with these shameless plugs.
Anyways, if you're looking for guidance on choosing the right type of performance product look at Mods for Dummies. Overall this book is a good supplement to read for it's tips and installation instructions, but isn't as detailed as other books.

does anyone not know how to screw the pedal set onto your car? this book will show you how to turn the screw drive illustrated with colour pictures!!! I bought both this book and the Haynes compact sport performance, and regret the both purchases. I was looking for something with more creative ideas in customizing one's car, and this book is nowhere near my expectation. This book, imho, in nothing but a chronicle of installating parts (such as the pedals). There is only one valuable section showing you how to custom build your own speaker box, but still far from considered informative. I was thinking of purchasing Haynes entertaining manual, but after reviewing these 2 books, I am having different thoughts.

The book does have tons of colour pictures, but the contents are only good for elementary level. It shows you how to install performance spark plug wire! That is how elementary it is. For turbo or supercharge, it has only a few pages of colour pictures, not very informative. There is nothing in the book you cannot find from the Internet. Good for book shelf collection. defenitely not a book for any garage warrior. I regret the purchase.

This book is a good compendium of info about today's performance bolts on for sport compact cars in general. It have huge and detailed graphics with precise explanations about many topics.
