As a wildly popular local dance show, Soul Train provided a venue for Chicago's soul singers and political activists and gave African American teenagers their very first significant chance to see and identify with their peers on television. The subsequent national series garnered even more popularity, establishing producer and host Don Cornelius as one of the most successful pioneers of African American television production. This work discusses Cornelius's role in the evolution of his groundbreaking series from a small, all-black 1970s television show to a lucrative brand name applying not only to the program, but also to awards and various merchandise in the present day. The very first two chapters focus on Cornelius's years in Chicago and the initial launching of Soul Train in 1970. As a long time fan of Soul Train, I was really excited to see someone made a serious literary effort to document it's rich history. While somewhat of an academic approach to the topic, it is a good synopsis of a highly entertaining and (in hindsight) socially trendsetting dance/music genre. I was thrilled that it documented what I remember about the show from the early 70's, to include Don Cornelius' one and only trip down the Soul Train Line. My major beef with this book is that it does not have a single picture of the creator and host, the Soul Train Gang or any of the performers who graced the stage of the Los Angeles version (the original Soul Train was based in Chicago.) The only thing I can figure is that copywrite issues prevented their inclusion. This is unfortunate and detracted from a fairly well researched and written history about the "Hippest Trip in America."
