At one time, Captain Donald MacIntyre was a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm. In WW2, however, he commanded a succession of Escort Destroyers during the battle of the Atlantic during which he was awarded 3 DSOs and the DSC. On retirement from the Navy in 1954, he became a much respected naval historian with several successful books to his credit.
"Famous Fighting Ships" is a large coffee-table book packed with information and photographs surrounding 10 great warships. Listed in the order they were built (from 1579 to 1938), they are; Revenge, Redoubtable, USS Constitution, Mikasa, Seydlitz, HMS Warspite, USS Washington, Scharnhorst, HMS Ark Royal and USS Enterprise.
Using his customary skills of presentation and research (including photograph research), MacIntyre tells the reader all there is to know about these great ships and even goes on to compliment his accounts of the earlier vessels with brief details of later warships to bear the same name. With every page of well written text supported by photographs of ships, people, models, maps and documents, this book is thoroughly recommended reading.
