Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
In the midst of listening to Elvis Presley’s rock and roll and the soulful tunes of Ray Charles, Americans in 1962 must deal with the grim possibility of nuclear war. Fear hovers across the land, especially when President John F. Kennedy advises the nation to build bomb shelters and stockpile food.

Known only to a few is the highly experimental American surveillance aircraft, the Blackbird. In order to protect the country, despite the uncertainty of the Blackbird’s capabilities and the dangerous location of its destination, the American Security Council commits U.S. spy pilot Paul Hammond to fly the Blackbird and crack Russia’s Iron Curtain.

But the Soviets have a secret defense, one they’re willing to use even if it means a nuclear clash with the Unites States. It’s up to Hammond to penetrate their defenses and save the world from nuclear holocaust.

Caught in between is Rachel Cummins a Washington insider who is actually Oksana Pavlodar—a Russian spy.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent Book, Worth the Time and Adventure !!
Prospective Purchasers: The novel was a pleasant surprise. Originally, I thought the novel would focus on the engineering, the aeronautics, and the possible history of the U2 and SR-71. I was extremely pleased that "Kill the Blackbird" had all of the ingredients necessary to make an excellent novel. From a historical perspective, I relived some of the facts concerning Francis Gary Powers, the missions of U-2s, and the Cuban missile crisis. Except for the cast of characters in the book, its my understanding that the information is factual. The characters in the book were well protrayed by the author and their roles where very interesting. I was most pleased that the author ended the novel wonderfully with some last-minute, unexpected surprises. I suggest you read the excellent story (loaded with suspense, a love-triangle, danger, and risk), an adventure with an excellent accounting during a difficult era in history, and for the general flow of the story for it is an excellent read. I hope the author continues in his quest to entertain the many readers.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - What a story?
This book is a fictional account of a serious time in our nation's history but parts of it read like a chapter from a history book. It made me remember the scary days between us and the Russians - the Bay of Pigs and Khrushchev. I enjoyed the story and the emotional dilemmas' faced by Paul Hammond and Rachel Cummins. It starts off slow but takes off just like the heightened speed of the Blackbird. I recommend this book as well as the other books I have read by R. J. Radner. Every book is different and pleasurable.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Very believable.
Having lived through the minute by minute fear and terror of the Cuban Missile Crisis, I find Mr. Radner's book to read frightingly more like history than fiction. He gives us a crisp, focused account of what might well be the deeper secrets behind the headlines that terrified us all. Layer upon layer of speculation and intrigue unfold and we are confronted with some ultimate questions about the values of our own lives and the world we have contructed. There is abundant attention given to the "human interest" aspects of the great drama that envelopes the people in the story. There is also the mind boggling fact of the great spy plane that appeared at the fringe of the atmosphere at the same time as did the specter of Red missiles just 90 miles away in Cuba. But, is the real reach of America's power in its futuristic technology or in its embrace of the essentials of individual, private lives. And, are either of these strong enough to resist the imperious resolve of the implacable foe that was virulent Bolshevism in the mid-20th century? Three layers of struggles play out in this compelling read: the huge, sprawling struggle between Communism and freedom; the competing strengths of human verus machine intelligence gathering; and, the eternal dichotomy of the state versus the individual. Mr. Radner gives us clear choices and a steady course to follow. It is SO real, it probably IS true.
