I remember finding the BSC over fifteen years ago, and reading most if not all of the earlier books. While many people would consider this a "tweener" novel today, the truth is that these books had lots of practical advice about relationships and babysitting. To me today, these books are appropriate for today's youth, even if many youngsters yesterday may think this series is outdated! I have since given away all of my BSC books except one that was autographed by Ann Martin, and hope that someone else enjoyed them as much as I did. This book is a nice debut to what was a classic series back in the 80's and 90's.
While some might scoff at the idea of a baby-sitting club, i felt that the idea was presented well throughout the series, with its share of accomplishments and problems. This was a good book that started off a more than decent series.

The main character is a girl Kristy who has two friends: MaryAnn, her best friend, and Claudia, just a friend. (But, Claudia hasn't spoken to Kristy ever since school started.) Kristy does a lot of babysitting and so do her friends.
Kristy has a good idea--to start a babysitter's club, where all of her friends can hang out together while babysitting. Kristy and her friends live in Stony Brook, Connecticut.
I believe that the author's main theme of is it is good to have many good friends and to do fun things together.
My favorite part of the very first The Baby Sitter's Club book is Kristy's very first babysitting job where she actually has to baby sit for dogs!
The book doesn't start in an exciting manner, however, as you read it gets more exciting and better and better. The Baby Sitter's Club book is very entertaining and would interest a girl from age eight to twelve years old.

kristy comes up with an idea to form a babysitters club. dealing with strict parents, odd secrets, new families and more isn't easy. but shy, timid mary anne, bossy, tomboy kristy, artistic, creative claudia and fashionable, cool stacey are friends for ever!

I've been reading ths series for awhile now, and while I don't think these books are exactly classics, I think they are a nice, light read and are just nice for relaxing.
What some people have got to remember are that these books are for KIDS. That is why there is no drugs, sex, or suicide or anything. Well, Ann touched up on those problems in a few, but she made it perfectly clear that that is WRONG.
And while the fact that Mallory and Jessi baby-sit for nine- and ten-year-olds is unrealistic (among other things), the books are just good. They're often funny and the little kids' ("charges") antics remind me of when I was younger (I'm actually 16 but don't have an e-mail address). Some of the books are dumb, like Dawn and the School Spirit War, but some are incredible, like Mary Anne Saves the Day and the third one (sorry, I forgot the title).
The book itself? Well, Kristy's Great Idea was not my favorite BSC book, but it was decent. It had a lot going on and was interesting; a real page-turner. You get to meet the three original members. However, something bugs me about it; I can't quite figure out what it is. I think it's just the writing style; it seems a smidge different from the other books. You'll have to read it yourself to see what I mean.
Overall, nice series for kids, decent book.
