Product Description:
Dirk Pitt's first, most terrific adventure! Dirk Pitt, death-defying adventurer and deep-sea expert, is out to the ultimate test as he plunges into the perilous waters of the Pacific Vortex -- a fog-shrouded sea zone where dozens of ships have vanished without a trace. The latest victim is the awesome superb Starbuck, America's deep-diving nuclear arsenal. Its loss poses an unthinkable threat to national defense. Pitt's job is to find it, salvage it, before the sea explodes. In a furious race against time, Pitt's mission swirls him into a battle with underwater assassins-and traps him in the arms of Summer Moran, the most stunningly exotic and dangerous toward disaster, Clive Cussler plummets his hero onto an ancient sunken island-the astonishing setting for the explosive climax of Pacific Vortex!

Great quick read. You can tell it is the very first book in the series but it is still good. It helps to establish the characters for the following books. A must read.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - I Really Enjoyed This One
Pacific Vortex was apparently the very first book Clive Cussler ever wrote. Word is he didn't want to publish this one, but friends and family encouraged him to.

I'm glad he did.

I rate it as one of his most entertaining novels. It really keeps you turning those pages as Cussler had Dirk Pitt carving through the story at a rapid pace.

The Dirk Pitt series (and all Cussler books for that matter) are entertaining and a lot of fun to read.

Reading fiction is all about entertainment and escapism. Clive Cussler always manages both.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - PACIFIC VORTEX
I chose PACIFIC VORTEX because a co-worker at the local TV station I work at said, if I read any of Clive Cussler's novels and I did not think his protagonist, Dirk Pitt, was the perfect man, there was something wrong with me. I was intrigued. So I researched Cussler's series because I wanted to start at the beginning, all though, from what I understand you can read any of his novels about Dirk Pitt, in any order. I finished PACIFIC VORTEX at 3 a.m. last night, because I couldn't put it down. I am a scuba diver and I study zoology so I liked how the author weaved his scuba and sea facts into the story. And I have to admit, my co-worker was right. Cussler's, Dirk Pitt, is pretty close to what many women might consider a perfect man: good sense of humor, great looking (my idea of a great looking Dirk Pitt with purple eyes and grey hair might be very different then my co-workers, which is the interesting, personal experience I like about novels). Dirk is also intelligent, adventurous and caring. I liked two things Cussler did in this novel: main plot and subplots. His main plot takes place in Hawaii and his protagonist, Dirk Pitt, has many adventures trying to locate and salvage a military submarine. The subplots were most interesting when they were about Dirk Pitt's love interests. Cussler balanced the main plot nicely with sexy subplots and I hope there is more of this as I continue the series. Now if I can just figure out what book comes subsequent after PACIFIC VORTEX. I found a list of the order on wikipedia and there appears to be 19 books. I know I don't have to read the Dirk Pitt adventures in order but I probably will, and if they are as fun as this one, I will also read all of them. I can honestly say, Clive Cussler has a new reading fan. In real life the author, Clive Cussler, is a scuba diver, ship wreck finder, started a real NUMA (a make believe organization in his novels) and some of his books have been made into movies.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Wow!
My older brother has been a fan of Cussler's work for 30 years! In that time, he has urged Pitt after Pitt on me and I've always balked. I even had 3 Cusslers gathering dust on my to read shelf.

Then I came across Pacific Vortex. Just minutes after discussing the author with a good friend of mine, I stumbled upon this early, very first Pitt adventure. Seeing as whenever I start a new series, I like to start with the very very first one, I picked up the book and, after 30 years, read it on the spot.

Wow!

I couldn't put this book down! As a fan of classic pulp fiction from the 30s and 40s, this was like coming home. And it was great to see the legacy being carried on with such deft skill. Great pacing, mysterious mastermind plot, an engaging main character. I was captivated. And could not, for the life of me, explain to myself why I had waited so long to give this series a try.

I've been told that the later novels are better than this one. Pacific Vortex does have its flaws. What very first novel doesn't? But I was still swept away by this story of a missing nuclear sub. And couldn't help thinking that, if this series only gets better, I've got to be along for the ride. So it's subsequent stop Mediterranean Caper!

For any new readers, like myself, curious about the series, this is really the book to start with. If the other books are as much better as people claim, this one will suffer if read after the later books. So, if you've wanted to try a Dirk Pitt, start here. It's not perfect, but it is a great read and you can see the promise that will come to fruition in later books.

A truly enjoyable adventure!

A worthy read. No sex between Pitt and Summer, how did he end up with unknown twins later Clive?
