Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The Best of Action
This is the third book I have read of DuBrul's. He surely is the equal to Cussler and any other action writer I have read. I found his action along with good research always makes a good read. The geology really was a nice add on to the novel. I also enjoyed the diving but all and all I can only recommend it highly and I will continue to read all his books.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - What time is it?
By far the best of the Mercer series. This book is a change of pace for DuBrul, and a welcome one. Still action packed and fast paced; the story itself evolves into the storied Phoenix, as life and death come together as one. I enjoyed the character of Tisa, her mysteriousness folds around the story as it does with Mercer. There's not enough Harry and his cane, but it still deserves 5 stars. I couldn't help but equate the character "Luc", with Jordan's Wheel of Time, but alas another horrifying death to Mercer's credit. The ending should be mentioned because of its power. Is it abrupt? Yes. Does it fit with the story? Definitely. I do wonder if Mercer gets his watch back though. What time is it? It's time for another Mercer adventure. Enjoy.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - goofy
DuBrul is a decent enough writer to keep you engrossed in this story until its end. But aside from that, this is a very silly book that is insane in its plot contrivances. I noticed on the cover that Clive Cussler said that this was a great book, and I have to say that if I were to name one author that DuBrul reminded me of, it would be Cussler. I have a lot of problems with Cusslers books and cant help but laugh often as I turn the pages. This is my very first DuBrul and if 'Deep Fire Rising' is an indicator of what all of his books are like, DuBrul is skating on an edge even way more far-fetched than the ludicrous Cussler.

Philip Mercer is James Bond from the MoonRaker variety. The places that Mercer finds himself would never ever come about. If this story were to have some relevance in reality it would have needed to break the steps that Mercer takes into a dozen characters. Aside from that, Running benieth the story is this mystical group that predicts the future. Ahh, its painful. What saves the book and allows the reader to continue from one chapter to the subsequent is DuBrul's excellent writing skills. You can do better than this book. It's not hard to find an author more skilled at crafting a plot. I would steer you away from DuBrul if I could.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - First Time Reader of DuBrul
Having read his collaboration with Cussler, I couldn't wait to pick up a copy of one of his books. And it proved not to be disappointing at all. His knowledge of geology is written into the book without being boring to the average reader. I enjoyed this book and am thrilled to find another action author to savor.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - The formula is getting old.
Jack Du Brul is a good writer, he actually is a very good writer; but he also is a Clive Cussler clone. And that may not necessarily be a good thing. His hero Philip Mercer is a carbon copy of Dirk Pitt. As a matter of fact Du Brul is acting as ghost writer for Cussler latest installment of his Oregon Files series.

His books are good entertainment, this one is a little exhausting, by the end of the book Mercer has gone around the world at least three times, unfortunately you are so tired you don't even care of the outcome anymore. The plots are also kind of dislodged, there is a plot line that starts in Area 51 that never gets resolved...

Anyway, if you like the Cussler stile Du Brul fits the bill, but I would try some of his other offerings like "The Medusa Stone" or "Pandora's Curse" instead of This one.
