Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Cute Pictures, Poor for Reading
This book has those little pictures used in place of words - supposedly so that early or pre-readers can "help" read the book. There are too many pictures and it is annoying as an adult who could read the words, but must instead memorize what each picture stands for. My son, who is beginning reading, would have found this helpful if they had used pictures for the more difficult words, but they didn't. Words like "hose" and "tire" are picturized, yet words like "firefighters" are not. My kids still love to look at the pictures, but I hate to read it to them, as none of us can seem to remember all of the many pictures. Not worth it.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - One of my four year old's favorite books
My son loves EVERYTHING with wheels - or anything that goes for that matter. We have dozens of books of trains, airplanes, cars, trucks, tractors, etc... He has several Tonka books, but this is the very first "power reader" that I purchased for him. I bought it through his scholastic book club at school. It was a Tonka book he did not have. What is great about this book is that there are pictures in the text in place of some words. When I read to him, I follow the text with my finger and I pause at these pictures. He tells me what the picture is so he can "read" with me. It is the end of the world if I "read" those pictures. (There is a key of the pictures with the printed words in the beginning of the book which we review every time we read the book together) When we are done "reading" each page together, we stop and look at the pictures and talk about them. The ladder on the ladder truck is tall. The fire is hot. The fire trucks have tires. The fire truck is dirty, they are cleaning it. The dalmatian dog is hungry. The best part is that he gets really excited that he can "read" with me. I am purchasing the rest of the books in the Power Reading series. I have read this book just about every night for about a month, but I enjoy reading it with my son because of his excitement that he can "read" too. It is hard to become tired of a book when your son is so excited about reading it. (The fire chief is a woman, so the book is appropriate for little girls too.)
