I read this book a few years ago and hated it. The plot was horrible and the characters were oblivious to the most obvious things. I remember they found a hat and couldn't figure out who it belonged to when it was totally obvious. Pinky Pye, the sequel, was a much better book.

Ginger Pye was a really good book. Out of five stars I would give it a rating of four stars. I truly enjoyed the book, but it also has some sad parts.
Ginger Pye is a book about a girl named Rachel, her brother Jerry, and their puppy Ginger. Jerry wants to buy a dog, which Mrs. Speedy's is selling in her barn. Rachhel thinks that it is a good idea too, and their mom says they can buy it. All they have to do is earn a dollar by six a clock and the puppy is theirs. (I think in that time that was a lot of money, because they made a big deal about having to earn it so quikly.) They were able to earn the dollar and they got the puppy. There was a person with a orange hat that also wanted their puppy. On Thanks Giving they put the puppy out side in a fence in the back yard. Then they ate Thanks Giving dinner. When they went back out side to get Ginger, he was gone! The book is about them having to find him. The problem is where is he? Did he get out of the fence or did some one steal him?
I like the book because it has great detail and good characters. There is Uncle Bennie (he is only three, but he is Rachel and Jerry's uncle), and Ginger (a cute and smart puppy).
It was a good book. It had so much detail about the characters, and everything. I sure enjoyed reading it. If you like mystery books, this is the book for you!

Halfway through Ginger Pye, I knew I wanted to write a review of this classic children's story, because I really loved reading it! After my 10-year old daughter recommended it to me, I began the book and was immediately drawn in by the characters and setting (half way between Boston and NY, in the fictitious town of Cranbury). The writing is sensitive and just plain old fun to read. The main characters, Jerry,Rachel and Ginger, have emotional depth (dogs have some--don't laugh!) and this book made me yearn for "simpler times", when children were allowed to explore the outdoors, and use their imaginations to a greater extent, perhaps, than the children of today. Like most good children's literature, though, Ginger Pye is timeless.
