Product Description:

It was a desperate mission that made front-page headlines and captured the attention of millions of readers around the world. In January 1998, in the dead of an Alaskan winter, a cataclysmic Arctic storm with hurricane-force winds and towering seas forced five fishermen to abandon their vessel in the Gulf of Alaska and left them adrift in thirty-eight-degree water with no lifeboat. Their would-be rescuers were 150 miles away at the Coast Guard station, with the nearby airport shut down by an avalanche.

The Last Run is the epic tale of the wreck of the oldest registered fishing schooner in Alaska, a hellish Arctic tempest, and the three teams of aviators in helicopters who withstood 140-mph gusts and hovered alongside waves that were ten stories high. But what makes this more than a true-life page-turner is its portrait of untamed Alaska and the unflappable spirit of people who forge a different kind of life on America's last frontier, the 'end of the roaders' who are drawn to, or flee to, Alaska to seek a final destiny.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic Read
I began reading disaster/survival at sea books about 3 years ago and so far have gotten through about 20.
Some good, some just O.K.
This one however was fantastic. The details of the Coast Guard helicopter missions were amazing and gripping. I could just picture the helicopter over the monster swells in blinding snow.
I also like how the author really examined the people involved. You learn a lot about the fisherman and the rescuers, and none of it is sugar coated.
Fast paced and enjoyable - even if stories of the sea aren't your very first choice.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - GREAT READ!!!
As a avid reader of all non-ficton adventure books this one ranks way up there, This is one book you truly can't put down, So well written I thought I was there.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - An Excellent True Story of Coast Guard Search & Rescue
I highly recommend this book! It is a well documented story of U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue in freezing weather and during a major hurricane in Alaskan Waters. The Coast Guard Search and Rescue personnel are often the unsung heros in today's world. Yet they truly do risk life and limb in the rescues they do. I also know this from my experience in assisting them at times on cases. Many people owe their lives to these dedicated people. Additionally, this book emphasizes the importance of having a proper respect of nature and the ocean.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great read
This is an action-packed page turner ala Blackhawk Down. The very first 20 pages pique your interest, the subsequent 100 or so are a tad slow but develop the characters, while the last third is hard to put down. The story is this: some unlucky Alaskan commercial fishermen finally have fish jumping in their boat only to go in the drink during a huge storm. The very first two Coast Guard helo's can't effect the rescue but the last finally does, too late for two of the crew. The point of view is from both the men in the water trying to stay alive and the Coasties who are trying to save them.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best books I've read
I read this book and could not put it down. Todd Lewan took this story of a rag tag group of fisherman and the dedicated Coast Guard search and rescue crews to a heart pounding conclusion. I spent 30 years flying in Coast Guard aircraft as a helicopter hoist operator and rescue swimmer. I retired in 1996, but Todd Lewan's writing brought me out of retirement and back in the action. Reading the book actually gave me goose bumps. I knew most of the Coasties that he wrote about and he made each and every one of them come to life on the pages with stories that gave insight into their personal lives as well as professional lives.
Thanks for taking me back into the action, Todd. Bravo Zulu!
